Welcome to Ashburnham Estate

Ashburnham (or Ash) is a beautiful boutique hotel set in its own 100-acre tea estate, around an hour north-east of Kandy, in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. The estate boasts stunning waterfalls and far reaching views up to and across the Knuckles Mountains, not to mention around 60 acres of lush tea fields, plucked each day.

The house has a funkier edge than most estate bungalows. It very much retains, though, its 1930’s planter heritage. You’ll soak that up with sundowners on the terrace or by the ‘Aga Bar’.

Uniquely styled rooms

Each of Ash’s six bedrooms are unique. All have large four-poster beds, with great mattresses, toppers, and duvets – the latter not always a necessity!

It offers cosy doubles, a very large suite and a great ‘Family Room’ perfect for 3-5 people.

Two of the doubles join neatly to make another good family option.

Fresh local fare

Reggie, the houses wonderful Kandyan chef, produces great food, both western and Sri Lankan.

The place doesn’t hanker after Michelin stars but we love what he serves up; superb curries; uncomplicated but great European fare; and excellent scones and cakes each afternoon. The kitchen uses as much produce from its own vegetable garden as possible and sources other ingredients locally.

Here’s what the guests say…

“This remote authentic Estate really does conjure up the feelings of what life must have been like for an Englishman in Sri Lanka in the 1930s. My wife rated this her number one accommodation on our Sri Lankan tour.”

Mike, UK - Trip Advisor

“Overflowing with character and charm, Ashburnham is out of the pages of a novel…a working tea plantation, an old style homestead with views all over the hill country.”

Rick F, UK

“I cannot explain how magical this place was. It is take-your-breath-away beautiful, the managers are the most charming couple, the tea plantation manager made us feel so at home and took us on extra adventures when we asked about the area, the food was absolutely delicious.”

Sara D, California

Ashburnham is at an altitude of 800 metres so for much of the year enjoys weather of a hot English summer. It does get periods of heavy rain but wouldn’t be a tea estate without those! The upside to a wet week is a more thundering waterfall. Generally there’s no need for jumpers but having one in the bag for occasional cool evenings is sensible.
