Fortaleza (Galle Fort)

Welcome to Fortaleza

A wonderful mix of rooms in restored colonial-period properties dotted throughout the southern coast’s little historic urban anomaly.

Boutique living in the heart of Galle Fort

16 rooms altogether from classic boutique hotel (four in No. 9 Church Street) to private Rococo elegance (No 1. Court Square) and town-house high-style (Middle Street).

All properties are within a short cobbled-street stroll of No. 9, whose courtyard restaurant and bar serves as gathering spot for guests and, often, the wider Galle crowd. Each property can serve as ideal spot to hop into the Fort’s labyrinth of gem stores, boutiques and cafes, or jaunt a little further to beaches of the south.

Courtyard dining

An informal restaurant that attracts guests and visitors alike - the courtyard at No. 9 has a kind of Tropico-Latin vibe. Rough stone walls show off the buildings heritage but mix with modern touches.

Head chef, XX, serves a menu fairly timeless and well-perfected. Pan-fried mahi-mahi (a local white fish) and quite enormous grilled prawns sit alongside quicker lunch options of wraps and salads; all well complimented with homemade pickles and chilli jams.

Deserts of banoffee tart and coconut panacotta give something, perhaps, a little more familiar.

“Top notch!” We staid for two nights in the superior double room and absolutely loved our stay. The room is simply stunning. Lovely little details everywhere, fantastic bathroom, a lot of space, and a massive bed (I'm 6'5'', slept like a baby). Galle can get quite hot at times, so the AC in the room was a real bonus...

“Lovely boutique hotel” - A lovely hotel inside the fort that has been beautifully restored. Great food, nice bar, and excellent staff. Great location that made it easy to explore the old city. Charming and very memorable place!

“Fortuitous to have found this place!” - We arrived at Fortaleza after catching the train from Colombo to Galle (which was an experience). We were greeted with cool welcome drinks and were able to go to our room to refresh before officially checking in which was a nice touch. Ethan, the hotel manager, was welcoming and helpful throughout our stay giving us recommendations of where to go. There was a very relaxed atmosphere and the hotel staff were friendly and attentive.....

Galle’s Fort sits on the south-western edge of the island. The highway from the airport (with a little Colombo cross-over) whisks you down in around 2 hours. Trains from the centre of Colombo (Fort station) can have you in Galle in around 2-3 hours (speed can vary). Domestic flights (seaplane) from the capital don’t make great time savings but are an excellent way of commuting you from Kandy or the central hills. You’ll land at the lake at Kogalla and have a short drive from there into the Fort.
